Pikmin 3 is the third installment of the Pikmin series. It was first announced for release on the Nintendo Wii console at E3 2008, but no word was given regarding the game until E3 2012, where it was shown for the Nintendo Wii U. It appeared again during E3 2013, during a Nintendo Direct, in which the release dates for the game were announced; July 13, 2013 for Japan, July 26, 2013 for Europe, July 27, 2013 for Australia, and August 4, 2013 for North America.
Pikmin 3 features a brand new type of Pikmin - the Rock Pikmin. This Pikmin is able to be hurled at objects and walls to break them down and clear a path. However, all five of the original Pikmin colors return from Pikmin and Pikmin 2.
Instead of Captain Olimar being the main character, Pikmin 3 features four new characters - "leaders". It is unknown if they have any relation to Olimar and Louie or not, but they serve as the main characters. In the single-player campaign mode, the leaders can be switched between using the Wii U GamePad. When playing with friends, however, it is up to them to control the different leaders.
Cammie Dunaway has confirmed in an IGN interview that the New Play Control! Pikmin series is not what Miyamoto meant when he announced the new Pikmin. In the IGN review Dunaway said the following statement:
"It's not the Pikmin that Mr. Miyamoto referred to, no. Mr. Miyamoto referred to a new Pikmin, as opposed to the classics that are being rereleased on Wii."
The platform in which the game will run is on the Wii U, as recently confirmed by Shiguru Miyamoto in an interview with IGN, thus placing the release after the Wii U is released. Sometime in 2012 is a good estimate.
