The Breadbug, sometimes called the Vanilla Breadbug, is a peculiar creature from both Pikmin and Pikmin 2 that is similar to the Iridescent Flint Beetle in that it lives underground, does not attack Pikmin, and is too tough to be damaged by regular attacks. It slowly hobbles around looking for food, whether it be a Pellet or a dead enemy, and latches on to it ferociously when it finds something, eventually pulling the meal back to its den for later snacking. However, if its meal is something you want, you must instruct your Pikmin to grab the object and carry it back. The breadbug is not very strong, but it sure is persistent, only letting go of its dinner when the object is absorbed by the Onion/Research Pod. This is also the only way to injure the breadbug, aside from tossing Purple Pikmin onto one's back in Pikmin 2. Doing this twice will finally defeat it, but if it is able to make it back inside of its hole, then its health will regenerate. Breadbugs will not latch on to objects that are already being carried by your Pikmin. If you only have one or two Pikmin latching on to an item that a breadbug is pulling, the breadbug may overpower the Pikmin and kill them by dragging them into its burrow.
In Pikmin, the breadbug is found only at The Forest Navel, and one must be defeated in order to collect the Space Float, which was apparently ingested by the gluttonous monster. In Challenge Mode, it can also be found at The Impact Site.
In Pikmin 2, breadbugs are only found in the Dream Den and Glutton's Kitchen Caves. The Glutton's Kitchen has many of them though, and even has the Giant Breadbug as the cave boss. If a breadbug carries a Treasure into its den, it can only be retrieved by defeating it, at which point its burrow will disappear and any hidden treasures will be expelled. If your Marble is stolen by a breadbug in the 2-Player Battle mode, it can give you a big advantage over your opponent because they will most likely not be able to find it or retrieve it.
"The adult Breadbug competes for many of the same food sources as Pikmin, but its thick-skinned hide allows it to withstand most Pikmin group attacks. However, some researchers claim to have observed breadbugs being overwhelmed by massive numbers and reduced to food."
"Breadbugs are hearty and nutritious but also bland and unimaginative. They may be palatable in a pinch, but they hold no true culinary promise."
"This creature's thick hide protects it from most attackers."
